Cathedral of Saint George, Cape Town
On Wednesday 6 January, His Eminence Archbishop Sergios Metropolitan Bishop of Cape Town, officiated at the Service of the Holy Eucharist together with Father Nikolaos Giamouridis, parish priest of Cape Town and Deacon Father Nicholas Esterhuizen. The Great Service of the Sanctification of the waters followed. Present at the Service was Mr Fotis Sousalis, the vice president of the Hellenic Community of Cape Town who was also celebrating his name day.
His Eminence said that the Holy Sacraments and Mysteries are inexplicable and cannot be understood by the “rational mind” of human beings, no matter how clever or educated they may be – nor through theology or philosophy, but only through Faith! And that the only way that we can experience the Holy Trinity is through leading a sacramental life in the Church.
He thanked Mr Fotis Sousalis, (who was celebrating his name day) for attending the Service and explained that “fos” in Greek means “light” – the light of the Holy Trinity which sheds light on the whole of creation which leads us to salvation and to re-establish communion with our Creator. And that water is a fundamental element for all life on the earth and by blessing the waters on this day we bless the entire universe and the holy water so blessed is used by the local priests to to bless the homes of the faithful.
His Eminence ended by thanking Mr Fotis Sousalis for his continued loyal support of the church and his commitment to the well-being of the Hellenic Community of Cape Town and wished everyone present who were celebrating their name day.
