His Eminence Archbishop Sergios officiated at the Vespers service on Saturday evening and at the Service of the Holy Eucharist on Sunday, in the presence of the chairman of East London and environs, Mr Andreas Efstratiou. Refreshments were served after the Vespers service organised by the ladies of the community. After the Service of the Holy Eucharist the Celebrations continued with a Panigiri for the Patron Saint of their Church and community and a traditional lunch was served with delicious “Souvla” and “Loukomades.”

The children from the Greek School occupied a special place in the Church during the service. They also performed traditional dance and song at the celebration. East London has not had a Greek teacher from Greece for the past year and the needs of the school and the Sunday School are being organised by Presvetera Despina who is a qualified French teacher. She is being assisted by Ms Theonie and Ms Stella. All the events were very well attended by the community of East London and also other community members from the surrounding areas of King Williamstown, Grahamstown, Port Alfred, Queenstown, Umtata etc.

Also present were a number of people, who have returned to East London after having left for Greece and Cyprus, amongst them young professionals who found things difficult and decided to return to their home town. In his address His Eminence commended the communities for their efforts and participation in upholding,their faith and Holy Traditions and for ensuring that their children continue to learn the Greek language. He thanked Father George and the committee for the well organised events and everyone present for supporting their efforts. He also congratulated the teachers, and the children for their participation and polished performances of traditional dance and song.
